Berger wins; GVSU women claim sixth NCAA title in nine years

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Powerhouse Grand Valley State placed five runners in the top 30 to dominate the 2018 NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championships held Saturday at Schenley Park.

GVSU senior Sarah Berger won the women’s individual title in 22:07.7 and paced the Lakers to their second team title in three years and sixth in nine years. Berger edged Adams State junior Eilish Flanagan (22:12.4), who was the runner-up.

Grand Valley junior Allie Ludge was fifth individually in 22:39.7 and followed closely by teammate Hanna Groeber, a junior who was sixth in 22:40.6. GVSU senior Gina Patterson placed ninth in 22:53.3, and sophomore Madison Goen was 26th in 23:18.2. The Lakers’ top seven also included junior Stacey Metzger (108th) and junior Jessica Gockley (195th).

GVSU won the team event with 41 points. U-Mary finished second with 83 points and Adams State third with 90. The Lakers entered the NCAA Championships ranked third in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Poll.

The Michigan Tech women’s cross country team finished seventh with 288 points. Junior Emily Byrd placed 20th in 23:13.7 to lead the Huskies. Freshman Gabrielle Feber was 44th in 23:38.3 and senior Liz Bloch 53rd in 23:47.7. Also for MTU, senior Emily Vigil was 112th, freshman Michelle Bollini 113th, sophomore Carly Huggins 153rd and senior Sophia Farquhar 157th.

Ferris State junior Kathryn Etelamaki was 16th in 23:07.4, and Saginaw Valley State senior Allison Dorr finished 28th in 23:20.1.
