Grand Valley State Named 2018 GLIAC Cross Country Coaching Staffs of the Year

GLIAC -- Grand Valley State swept the 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's and Women's Cross Country Coaching Staff of the Year Awards following voting conducted by the league coaches. GVSU is guided by head coach Jerry Baltes and assistant coaches Aaron Watson and Kyle Barnes. This marks the 16th men's and 16th women's GLIAC Cross Country coaching honor in program history for the Lakers.

The 2018 GLIAC Cross Country Championships were held on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Gainey Athletic Complex on the campus of Calvin College, where the Lakers ran their stretch of GLIAC titles to 18 straight on the women's side and 17 consecutive on the men's side.

In the women's competition, the Grand Valley State squad totaled 17 points to earn the top prize by putting seven runners inside the Top 13, including the top four finish which was led by senior Sarah Berger who earned GLIAC Runner of the Year accolades following a 21:07.7 in front of teammate senior Gina Patterson who finished runner-up.

The GVSU men amassed an impressive 19 points on the day with its top six finishers being inside the top eight. The Lakers were paced by GLIAC Runner of the Year Zach Panning who took home the title following a time of 24:10.6 with teammate Enael Woldemichael in second at 24:35.6. GVSU's Tanner Chada earned a fourth place finish and GLIAC Freshman of the Year with a time of 25:01.4.

First team All-GLIAC awards were handed out to the Top 10 finishers in each race, while second team honors were awarded to finishers 11 through 20 with the exception of only the first seven finishers for each team are eligible for all-league accolades. Click here to view full awards results.
