Wayne State's Byrnes & Defrain Sweep GLIAC Cross Country Athlete of the Week Accolades

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards after the third week of the 2018 cross country season. Wayne State freshman Ashley Defrain captured GLIAC Athlete of the Week honors on the women's side for the second time this year, while Wayne State freshman Ethan Byrnes garnered the men's award. 


WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Ashley Defrain - Wayne State

Wayne State freshman Ashley Defrain (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) led Wayne State to a second-place team finish (out of the 14 teams) at the 2018 GRCC Raider Invite with a first-place individual time of 17:20.0 (out of 129 runners).  In her first collegiate meet, Defrain finished fourth at the Wolverine Twilight Invitational hosted by Michigan-Dearborn.  At the Calvin Knight Invite, the previous meet that the Warriors participated in, she took second.


MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Ethan Byrnes - Wayne State

Wayne State freshman Ethan Byrnes (Plymouth, Mich.) helped Wayne State to a second-place team finish (out of the 13 teams) at the 2018 GRCC Raider Invite with a third-place individual time of 24:10.2 (out of 152 runners).  Byrnes was the first runner from an NCAA school to cross the finish line.  Two weeks prior in his first collegiate meet, Byrnes finished 12th at the Calvin Knight Invite.
