FSU's Wirth and PNW's Shaginaw named GLIAC Cross Country Athletes of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the second week of competition of the 2022 cross country season. Ferris State senior Brandon Wirth was named GLIAC Male Athlete of the Week, while Purdue Northwest senior Christine Shaginaw earned GLIAC Female Athlete of the Week honors.


MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Brandon Wirth, Ferris State

Ferris State University men’s cross country senior standout Brandon Wirth won the 47th annual Ray Helsing Bulldog Invitational this past Saturday (Sept. 10) at FSU’s Katke Golf Course, clocking 26:53.83 on the 8,000-meter course. Wirth finished first among the 49 competitors, leading FSU to the team championship in the Bulldogs’ first competition of the season. The Bulldogs had the top six place finishers and 11 of the top 13 overall in the race on their home course. Wirth was the only runner in the men’s 8K event to clock under the 27-minute mark.

WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Christina Shaginaw, Purdue Northwest

Purdue University Northwest's Women's Cross Country team won the 7th Annual Prairie Star Invitational at the University of Illinois Springfield, scoring 24 points, just ahead of host Illinois Springfield (33). Senior Christina Shaginaw claimed the individual title for the second week in a row, winning the 5K race in 18:21.2.
