AUGUSTA, Mich.
-- Day 1 of the 2023 GLIAC Women's Golf Championship, held at Stonehedge North Golf Club in Augusta, Mich., produced an individual medalist and the field of four for the medal match play semifinals.

With cold temperatures expected for Saturday, Friday's competition consisted of 36 holes of stroke play instead of the traditional 18.

Wayne State's Maisarah Hezri stunned the field by shooting an 8-under, 136 on Friday, to capture the 2023 GLIAC Women's Golf Medalist crown. Hezri carded a 1-under, 71 through the first 18 holes and then posted a brilliant round of 7-under, 65. Ferris State's Danielle Staskowski finished three strokes back in second while Warrior teammate Rebeca Vestman placed third (-4, 140).

Wayne State qualified first for Saturday's GLIAC semifinals, when the format will switch to match play. The Warriors finished three strokes ahead of second-place Ferris State. Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State also advanced to the semifinals.

The top two semifinal finishers will then meet on Sunday in an 18-hole match-play battle for the 2023 GLIAC championship.
