September 15, 2012 - For the first time in 35 months, the Hillsdale College volleyball team lost a GLIAC match at home Saturday afternoon.
Facing a big, strong and experienced Ferris State Bulldog squad, the Chargers hung tough through the first two sets, but fell 3-0 at Jesse Philips Arena. Hillsdale is now 2-8 on the season, and will host Ohio Dominican and Tiffin next weekend.
Ferris State, ranked 19th in the nation, is Hillsdale's seventh nationally ranked opponent in its first 10 matches of the season. Oftentimes Saturday, the Chargers had a lineup on the floor with either freshmen, or younger players who didn't receive much playing time a year ago. The difference wasn't very apparent through the match's first two sets, which saw Hillsdale take an early lead before falling by four and three points.
But FSU cranked up its intensity and execution in the third set, and sprinted out to a big early lead. A pair of blocks by senior Lauren Grover caused the Chargers to make a little noise, but FSU finished the set on a 7-1 run to wrap up the match.
Freshman Jenalle Beaman and junior Bekah Draves had eight kills apiece to lead the Hillsdale attack. Ferris State limited Hillsdale to a team hitting percentage of .169 in the match, and outblocked the Chargers 7-6.
Junior Sydney Lenhart had a team-high 17 assists for Hillsdale, while sophomore Bailey Lindner had 14 digs. Grover finished with two solo blocks and four block assists.
