Charger women's tennis team tops SVSU 6-1 for first win of season

The Hillsdale College women's tennis team got back on track after a tough loss to Wayne State last weekend, taking down visiting Saginaw Valley State on Sunday, also by a 6-1 score, for its first win of the season.

The Chargers' top singles and doubles pairing carried the day, led by senior Sarah Hackman, who rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over SVSU's Sara Neves at No. 1 singles, and teamed with junior Canela Luna for a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles as well.

Luna also made quick work of her singles match at No. 2 singles for the Chargers, winning 6-3, 6-2 over Emma Charlton of SVSU.

At No. 3 singles, Hillsdale College freshman Libby McGivern picked up the first collegiate singles win of her career in an impressive 6-1, 6-1 defeat of SVSU's Nicole Johnson. McGivern also teamed with sophomore Julia Wagner for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point for the Chargers.

Senior Sophia Spinazze also earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Chelsea Dzienga of SVSU at No. 4 singles for Hillsdale, and juniorEllie Chawner pulled out a thrilling 7-5, 5-7, 10-3 win over Irene Barreiro at No. 6 singles as well.

Hillsdale's lone singles defeat was still a close, hard-fought match, as sophomore Helana Formentin took the first set 6-2 and went to a third set tiebreak with Adiya Young of SVSU in a narrow loss at No. 5 singles.

The Chargers (1-1) have just two events remaining in their fall calendar, as Hillsdale hosts its annual invitational this Sunday, Oct. 10, welcoming in three other teams for a day of competition.
