75TH HUSKIES HOMECOMING
Saturday's (Oct. 13) Michigan Tech-Northwood game will be the Huskies' 75th Homecoming football contest since the sport's inception in 1920. During that span, Tech has compiled a 42-30-2 record (.581 winning percentage). The longest Homecoming win streak is seven games (1990-96). The longest Homecoming losing streak is five games (1985-89). Tech played its first Homecoming game October 19, 1929, tying Northern Michigan, 0-0. Northern Michigan has been the Huskies' most common Homecoming opponent, with the two teams having met 16 times.
MINER'S CUP THREEPEAT
Michigan Tech became the first team to win the Miner's Cup three straight years with its 41-17 victory in Marquette last Saturday (Oct. 6). The Huskies have now won eight of the 11 Miner's Cup games since the trophy was created prior to the 2002 contest. Tech also pulled within a game of NMU in the all-time series (Wildcats lead 41-40-5).
MATT PULLS BACK CURTIN FOR ENCORE
Just one week after a record-setting game vs. Grand Valley State, wide receiver Matt Curtin turned in another stellar performance at Northern Michigan. Curtin hauled in seven passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns vs. the Wildcats to help the Huskies win 41-17. That gives him an incredible 16 receptions for 361 yards and seven TDs over the last two games. Curtin, a senior, had just 774 yards and four touchdowns in his first three seasons as a Husky.
SCORED 200; ALLOWED 100
After five weeks of the season, Michigan Tech has scored 200 points and allowed 100. The Huskies rank third in the GLIAC in scoring offense at 40.0 points per game and fifth in the league in scoring defense (allowing 20.0 per game). Among conference teams, only Ashland has a better scoring differential (+24.0).
SPECIAL TEAMS
Michigan Tech scored its third special teams touchdown of the season last Saturday (Oct. 6) with a punt block and return. Dan Perrault blocked the punt and Nelson Wienke picked up the loose ball and ran 12 yards for a touchdown. The Huskies scored on a punt return in week one vs. Tiffin and a kickoff return Sept. 29 vs. Grand Valley State.
SCARLETT UP TO THIRD IN EFFICIENCY, FOURTH IN YARDS
Quarterback Tyler Scarlett ranks third in the GLIAC in pass efficiency with a rating of 151.7. He has thrown 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions on the season. The 6-1, 215-pound sophomore also ranks fourth in passing average per game with a 256.0 yards-per-game average.
GLIAC NORTH ALL KNOTTED UP
After five weeks of the conference season, there are five teams tied atop the GLIAC North Division standings. Michigan Tech is one of those five along with Grand Valley State, Saginaw Valley State, Wayne State and Hillsdale. Seven of the eight GLIAC North Division teams are above .500 compared to just two of the eight South Division squads.
SERIES VS. NORTHWOOD
Michigan Tech and Northwood have met 38 times since the series began in 1965. The Timberwolves own a 21-17 lead in the series, but the Huskies have won four of the last five and nine of the last 14 matchups. Tech claimed a 24-10 victory in Midland, Mich., a year ago.
COACH KEARLY
Michigan Tech head coach Tom Kearly is in his seventh season as head coach and 13th overall with the Huskies program. The skipper owns a 41-27 record (.603 winning percentage) and has coached Tech to two of the eight eight-win seasons in school history. Kearly, a Hancock native and 1979 Winona State graduate, coached at Central Michigan for 19 seasons before returning to the Copper Country in 2000. He was the GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2010.
ALL-TIME RECORD
Michigan Tech has an all-time football record of 344-332-17 (.509 winning percentage) in 90 seasons of intercollegiate football. The Huskies are 61-37 over the last 10 seasons (.622 winning percentage).
2012 CAPTAINS
Michigan Tech's team captains for the 2012 season are senior linebacker Justin Armstrong, senior defensive tackle Jake Clark, senior tight end Bryan LaChapelle and senior offensive lineman Chris Mullen.
HUSKY BITES
Michigan Tech has four non-offensive touchdowns this season with a punt return TD, a fumble return TD, a kickoff return TD and a punt block return TD. The Huskies had just two non-offensive scores all of last season … Michigan Tech ranks second in the GLIAC in turnover margin at plus 1.2 per game … Tech has had to leave the Upper Peninsula just once in its first six games of the 2012 season. That once was Sept. 15 at Walsh …Two former football players will be inducted into the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame on Friday (Oct. 12). Robert Peterson (1941-42, 46-47) and Kurt Coduti (1989-92) both played quarterback for the Huskies.
