The Hillsdale College men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season in a tense, hard-fought 5-2 defeat at the hands of regional foe Wayne St. in a neutral site match Sunday at Two's Athletic Club in Toledo, OH.
Hillsdale's No. 1 doubles team of Charlie Adams and Ivanhoe Lissanevitch rolled to a 6-3 win over the Warriors in their flight, but the Chargers dropped 7-6 tiebreakers at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to lose the doubles point by the slimmest of margins.
That, combined with a narrow three-set loss by Hillsdale at No. 5 singles was the difference in a match that went to the wire.
The Chargers got two wins in the singles portion of the competition. Adams won a 7-5 tiebreak to take a 7-6 win over Niklas Karcz of Wayne St. in the first set at No. 1 singles, then clinched the victory when Karcz retired in the second set.
At No. 4 singles, Brian Hackman got a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 win over Luke Laws of Wayne St. as well.
Hillsdale is now 6-1 on the season heading into the team's Florida trip over Spring Break week. The Chargers next play at Florida Southern University on Tuesday, March 10, the start of a three-match swing through the southern state.
