Volleyball Edged 3-2 at Malone

CANTON, OHIO — Michigan Tech set season highs for kills, attempts and digs but fell 3-2 in a five-set marathon at Malone today. The Huskies won the fourth set 25-15 to force a fifth set, but were defeated 15-11 in the final frame.

"What a match," said Tech coach Matt Jennings. "Malone is one of the most resilient and hard working teams in our league. We outplayed them in so many ways except in the most important area, the clutch. We simply didn't come through at crucial points in certain sets."

Tech opened with a 25-21 win in the first. Lauren Emmert served five straight times with a pair of aces to put the Huskies ahead 22-17. Stephanie Dietrich put it away with a kill.

The Huskies had three set points in the second but couldn't put it away. The Pioneers won three straight points to earn a 29-27 set victory.

The Black and Gold had three more set points in the third set with leads of 24-22, 24-23 and 25-24. In the end, MU took advantage of a service error and put down a kill for another 29-27 score.

Tech bounced back with a strong fourth set. It hit .325 with 14 kills and just one error in the frame, setting up the decisive fifth set.

A five-point run midway through the set by the Pioneers proved to be the difference in the 15-11 final.

Jacqueline Aird turned in a school-record 36 digs in the match. Four Huskies reached double figures in kills led by Emmert's match-high 17. Dietrich added 16 and a match-high .485 hitting percentage. Sylvie Rokosh (12) and Aubrey Havlichek (11) also reached double digits. Rachel Pohlod set a career high with 59 assists in the match.

"Congrats to Jackie for breaking the all-time single match dig record," said Jennings. "She continues to prove that she's an elite level defender and reliable leader."

Michigan Tech (6-8 overall, 5-4 GLIAC) will finish up its road trip with a non-conference match at Urbana on Monday (Oct. 6) at 6 p.m.

Note: The previous digs record was 34, held by both Stephanie Livingston (vs. Lake Superior State, Oct. 10, 1987) and Kristin Klock (at Mercyhurst, Oct. 5, 2003).
