Ferris State Tops Stars From Past In High-Scoring Alumni Game At Wink Arena

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad took on its stars from the past on Sunday (Oct. 20) as the current Bulldogs scored a 105-84 triumph over the alums in the annual Alumni Game at Jim Wink Arena.
The contest was played under game like conditions and the Bulldogs built a 54-35 halftime lead en route to the win. Four players from each squad reached double-digits as the two teams combined for nearly 200 total points with plenty of talent on the court.
The Alumni team, which was led by co-coaches and former players Cory Andreson and Jeff Hephner, used a national championship starting five as all five starters were members of the Bulldogs' 2017-18 NCAA Division II National Championship team in guards Drew Cushingberry and DeShaun Thrower along with forwards Noah King, Markese Mayfield and TyQuone Greer.
Despite the talented starting five, FSU's current squad jumped in front early and built a double-digit advantage in the early going thanks to some hot shooting and a strong early effort. The Bulldogs shot 54% in the first half and limited the alumni to only 36% shooting in grabbing a 19-point halftime edge.
The alumni, though, battled back in the second half and eventually trimmed the margin to nine points as head coach Andy Bronkema's current group utilized 12 players in the contest. Eventually, the Bulldogs regained control and cruised to the 21-point win on their home floor.
For Ferris State, junior Jaylin McFadden paced FSU with a game-high 20 points while junior Dorian Aluyi added 17 points and sophomore Mason Pline added 16 points. The Bulldogs also got 10 points from senior guard D'angelo Hughes.
Meanwhile, former Bulldog forward Matt Stoll paced the alums as he caught fire in the second half and finished with 16 points thanks in part to four-of-seven shooting from beyond the three-point line. King added 15 points with Thrower scoring 12 points and Jibreel Jackson adding 11 points with six assists. Cushingberry chipped in with nine points and five dimes.
Both teams shared the ball well as they combined for 52 total assists in a high-tempo contest that featured 69 fast break points. FSU led by as many as 26 points and never trailed against the Alumni in the victory.
Other members of the alumni contingent's who played included former Bulldogs Ty Miller, Matt DeHart, Daniel Sutherlin and Lou Williams in addition to Greer, Thrower, Cushingberry, King, Mayfield, Jackson and Stoll.
Ferris State will play its final exhibition contest on Tuesday (Oct. 22) as FSU hosts Calvin University starting at 7 p.m. (ET) inside Wink Arena. The Knights are led by first-year head coach and former Bulldog head coach Bill Sall.
