Ferris State Softball Continues Impressive Start With Two Wins In Kentucky

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad continued its impressive start to the 2021 season on Friday (Feb. 26) as the Bulldogs notched a pair of wins in day one play at the Blue Bridge Classic in Owensboro, Ky.

With the two wins, the Bulldogs improved to 6-1 overall this year. Ferris State topped Lake Erie 8-3 in the opener and then beat Cedarville 7-2 in the finale for two more regional victories.

In the first game, the Bulldogs scored the first run of the game in the first and then added six more in the third to build an early 7-0 edge. From there, FSU allowed only a single run in the fourth and two in the sixth while adding an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth for the victory.

FSU's Kristie Gray went the distance in the circle, giving up only three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk for her first victory of the year.

The Bulldogs were led at the plate by shortstop Kodi Ramirez, who belted a home run and totaled two RBI's along with two runs scored. Kaitlyn Orme had three hits for FSU and drove in a pair of runs as well for the Bulldogs. Both Abby Mitchell and Amara Zukowski had doubles to help the cause.

In game two, the Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead over Cedarville with four runs in the third inning. FSU would add a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth while giving Cedarville only a single run in both the bottom of the fourth and the fifth for the convincing win in the game, which featured a weather delay due to lightning.

Freshman pitcher Mckenzie Cleland improved to 5-0 on the season as she tossed all seven innings and allowed only two runs on six hits with 12 strikeouts and three walks.

Offensively, Ramirez tallied three hits to lead FSU with Orme scoring twice and posting a triple for the Bulldogs. Zukowski doubled as did Justice Ruggles in the win.

Ferris State returns to action for day two competition at the Blue Bridge Classic on Saturday (Feb. 27) against Quincy and Trevecca Nazarene. The games have been moved back up to 11 a.m. (ET) and 1 p.m. (ET), respectively, due to weather.
