Ferris State Beats SVSU At Home To Advance To GLIAC Women's Basketball Tourney Semifinals

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nation's 10th-ranked Ferris State University women's basketball squad advanced to the 2024 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semifinals by beating Saginaw Valley State 54-47 in quarterfinal-round action on Wednesday (March 6) evening inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs fell behind by nine points in the opening period before outscoring SVSU 19-6 in the second period while grabbing a nine-point halftime edge en route to the win.

With the win, the second-seeded Bulldogs advanced to the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday (March 9) and will face third-seeded Northern Michigan in Allendale at the Grand Valley State Fieldhouse Arena.

Ferris State was held to 35.8% shooting overall in the victory along with a two-of-18 (11.1%) showing from the three-point line, but managed to pull out the win to improve to 22-4 overall this year.

The Bulldogs got 11 points each from both senior DeShonna Day along with junior Kadyn Blanchard while junior Kenzie Bowers added 10 points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals. Senior guard Mallory McCartney chipped in with eight points, six assists and five boards with senior Chloe Idoni adding six points and five boards.

FSU posted a 37-35 rebounding edge in beating SVSU for the second time in three matchups this year and the Bulldogs came away with 11 offensive boards to only 10 for the Cardinals. Additionally, the Bulldogs forced 18 turnovers and had only 13 of their own, leading to a 17-11 margin in points off turnovers.

Saginaw Valley State was held to 36.4% shooting overall and made only three-of-17 (17.6%) three's along with four-of-six (66.7%) free throws.

The Cardinals were led by Aleshia Jones with 11 points and Megan McCalla added 10 points off the bench as SVSU closed the year with a 10-19 overall record.
