Ferris State Falls To Top-Seeded Michigan Tech In GLIAC Tourney Semifinals

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad closed out its spring season with a 3-0 setback to Michigan Tech in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semifinals on Saturday (April 10) afternoon at O'Neill Arena in University Center, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who beat fifth-seeded Northwood in the quarterfinals on Friday night, fell behind to the top-seeded Huskies and could not rally in the end. MTU won the first frame 25-17 followed by 25-18 and 25-18 scores in the second and third sets to garner the triumph.

FSU finished the spring campaign with an 11-5 overall record with the bulk of the Bulldog roster expected back for the fall 2021 campaign.

Senior All-American Katie O'Connell led FSU with nine kills and 21 digs in the setback, posting a .308 attack figure for the match. Meanwhile, both freshman Keona Salesman and middle hitter Kira Merkle totaled eight kills apiece.

Ferris state notched a .116 hitting percentage for the match with 32 kills and 17 errors on 129 attempts. Michigan Tech had a .259 hitting figure, garnering 51 kills and 15 attack errors on 139 tries.

Libero Nina Gorgijevska compiled 16 digs for FSU with Brooke Norder recording 10 digs. Freshman Kaylee Maat had 28 assists for the Bulldogs.

Michigan Tech was led by Anna Jonynas with 15 kills and Lindy Oujiri added 11 kills. Jonynas posted a team-high 16 digs and Laura De Marchi had 44 assists for the Huskies, who improved to 11-3 overall and advanced to the league tournament title match.

Overall, Ferris State had 60 digs with a single service ace and six blocks compared to MTU's 73 digs, five blocks and three aces.
