First Half Run Too Much For Bulldogs As FSU Garners Weekend Split With GVSU

Big Rapids, Mich. - A first half run was proved to be the difference as the Ferris State University men's basketball squad fell to rival Grand Valley State 70-51 on Saturday (Feb. 6) in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) weekend finale at FSU's Jim Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs, who won Friday's opener 68-65 over GVSU, jumped out to an 18-13 lead in the first half on Saturday before GVSU utilized an 18-1 run to take control. From there, the Lakers opened up a 35-22 halftime lead and outscored FSU 35-29 in the second half to garner the win and the weekend split.

Ferris State managed to shoot only 30.6% from the floor and FSU went only three-of-22 (13.6%) beyond the three-point stripe in suffering the setback. The Bulldogs were 10-of-18 (55.6%) at the free throw stripe.

Meanwhile, Grand Valley State finished shooting at 43.4% for the afternoon and went 20-of-26 (76.9%) at the line in addition to four-of-17 (23.5%) beyond the arc.

Deleon Brown paced three Lakers' players in double-digit scoring with a game-high 20 points while Jordan Harris added 14 points to go with nine rebounds and seven assists. GVSU also got 12 points and seven boards from Christian Negron.

For Ferris State, senior guard Walt Kelser was the lone Bulldog player to reach double-figures with 15 points in the game while adding five boards and two assists.

The Bulldogs did outbound the Lakers 41-38 and came up with 12 offensive boards overall. Both teams had 15 turnovers with FSU recording eight steals and three blocked shots to GVSU's nine steals and two blocks.

Both senior forward Michael Peterson and sophomore guard Jeremiah Washington dished out four assists each for FSU with Peterson also pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.

Ferris State hits the road next weekend to face Saginaw Valley State in GLIAC play on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13, in University Center, Mich. Friday's opener gets underway at 5 p.m. (ET) with Saturday's finale set for a 3 p.m. (ET) start.
