Big Finish Gives FSU Day Two Split At The Spring Games In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad garnered a day two split at The Spring Games in Florida on Monday (March 6) as FSU continued spring break action in the Sunshine State.

FSU fell to the University of Sioux Falls 4-2 in the opener before responding with an impressive 7-2 regional win over Northwood in Clermont.

Ferris State battled USF in the opener, taking a 1-0 lead in the second before Sioux Falls answered with three runs in the third. That would be all the opposition would need as USF limited FSU to a single run in the bottom of the third the rest of the way and added an insurance run in the seventh. Sioux Falls produced 11 hits in the game with FSU notching seven.

The Bulldogs got two hits each from both first baseman Evelyn Blood along with shortstop Abby Meyer in the setback. Maddie Gkekas drove in a run for the Bulldogs while Josie Prince registered a stolen base.

FSU's Catherine O'Donohue pitched two and two-thirds of an inning, giving up three earned runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout. Aryn Gallacher threw four and one-thirds innings in relief and allowed a single run on five hits with three K's and two walks.

The Bulldogs bounced back strong in game two, beating a Northwood team that entered the game with 10 wins already this season. FSU took a 3-0 lead into the fourth before NU cut the margin back to a single run in the bottom of the frame. Ferris State, though, sealed the win by adding four runs in the top of the seventh and shutting down the Timberwolves in their final at-bat.

Overall, FSU had 10 hits in the contest with two each from both outfielders Jadyn Joseph and Kylie Winkels. Right fielder Abby Mitchell knocked in two runs as did Winkels while Joseph scored three times and tripled in the victory. Ferris State also stole four bases as a team.

Ferris State utilized six different pitchers in the victory with on Mckenzie Cleland tossing more than one inning of action. She threw two scoreless innings while five others all pitched one frame. Together, the unit allowed only a single earned run on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

The Bulldogs are back on the field Tuesday (March 7) morning as they face Trevecca Nazarene in regional play at 10 a.m. (ET) followed by a 12:30 p.m. (ET) regional game versus Kentucky Wesleyan at The Spring Games.
