Bentley Earns Wins over Ferris State & Edinboro in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Junior shortstop Noelani Rivera (Clifton, N.J./Hawthorne Christian Academy), who had a second-inning  two-run homer, and senior center fielder Juliana Romeo (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield HS) each scored three times as the Bentley University softball team completed a 2-0 day at THE Spring Games with a 19-9 win over Edinboro University Sunday evening at The Diamond Plex.

In the first game of the day, Bentley scored three times in the bottom half of the last extra inning for a 7-6 victory over Ferris State University.

Against the Fighting Scots, Bentley scored  five times in the first and twice in the second to take a 7-3 lead and made it 14-5 with a seven-run fifth inning.

Graduate second baseman Julianne Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) and Romeo, two of the key factors in the decisive eighth inning against Edinboro, each had three hits. The Falcons also received two hits from junior third baseman Lindsey Allen (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech), senior left fielder Stacey Korotsky (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham HS), Rivera and sophomore catcher Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS)

Bentley's scoring was spread out with Rivera and Romeo two of eight Falcons who scored multiple runs. Crossing home plate twice were Allen, Korotsky, Slavin, freshman DH Kayle Mankins (North Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan HS), Hillier and senior right fielder Sami Palazzolo (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley School).

Against Ferris State, Bentley fell behind 6-4 in the top of the eighth after regulation ended with the score even at 4-4. Bentley freshman shortstop Katherine Noftall (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich HS) began the bottom half of the inning on second due to the international tie-breaker and the Falcons received back-to-back bunt singles from Palazzolo and Romeo to load the bases. For Romeo, it was the 100th hit of her career.

Allen singled on a hard ground ball to second, with both Noftall and Palazzolo racing home to tie the game at 6-6. After a walk again loaded the bases, Slavin singled through the left side, driving in Allen with the winning run.

Bentley jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. Senior first baseman Gabby Casalino (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills West HS) had a two-run single in the first, Palazzolo singled and scored on a passed ball in the second and Korotsky had an RBI single.

Ferris State, 5-6, answered with two runs in the third and one in both the fourth and sixth innings to forge the 4-4 tie.

Bentley's ten hits included two apiece from Allen and Palazzolo.

Bentley, 3-5, will play twice again on Monday, facing Dominican College (N.Y.) at 10 am and Slippery Rock at 12:15 pm. Both will also be at the Diamond Plex in Winter Haven.
