Bulldog Softball Drops Two Close Decisions To Davenport In League Home Doubleheader

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team battled to the finish and had a pair of late leads in both games, but dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader to visiting Davenport on Sunday (April 2) afternoon at the FSU Softball Field.

The Bulldogs suffered a 2-1 setback in the opener and a 5-3 decision in the nightcap.

In game one, Ferris State jumped in front by scoring the first run of the game in the fourth inning before the Panthers answered with a run in both the top of the fifth and top of the sixth to pull out the 2-1 win. DU finished with seven hits and limited FSU to five in the result.

The Bulldogs got hits in the opener off the sticks of second baseman Josie Prince, designated player Kaitlyn Orme, first baseman Evelyn Blood, catcher Natalie Teague and third baseman Brooklyn Verbeek, who drove in FSU's lone run. Shortstop Abby Meyer added a sacrifice in the setback and FSU also stole five bases.

Aryn Gallacher pitched five innings for FSU and allowed only a single earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Catherine O'Donohue allowed one run on three hits in two winnings of work. DU's Kelsey Byers earned the win, tossing all seven innings and giving up a single earned run on five hits with six K's and two walks.

In game two, the Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead with a run in the second followed by a run in the fourth and one more in the fifth. However, the Panthers responded by scoring five runs in the top of the seventh, including a three-run homer from first baseman Hayley Kreiger to left field to acocunt for the final three runs.

Davenport narrowly posted a 7-6 edge in total hits for the game. Both Verbeek and O'Donohue doubled for the Bulldogs. Blood had a squad-best two hits and the Bulldogs got RBI's from O'Donohue, Verbeek and Orme.

In the circle, Kristie Gray hurled six and one-third innings for FSU, allowing two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Kristina Baar came on and gave up two earned runs on one hit while O'Donohue allowed a single earned run on one hit in two-thirds innings pitched.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Monday (April 3) as they visit rival Grand Valley State for a GLIAC doubleheader in Allendale. The opening game begins at 3 p.m. (ET) with the second game slated for a 5 p.m. (ET) start.
