Ferris State Not Able To Overtake Wayne State In Motor City Matchup

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad played its final two scheduled Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road games of the regular-season on Tuesday (May 4) in Detroit, falling to Wayne State in an afternoon doubleheader in the Motor City.

The host Warriors pulled out a close 2-1 win in the opener and then topped FSU 13-5 in six innings in the finale.

In the opener, both teams posted seven hits, but the Warriors grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first. From there, FSU shut down Wayne State the rest of the way. However, FSU could only generate a single run of its own, coming in the sixth, in the setback.

The Bulldogs' lone run came from pinch hitter Evelyn Blood, who homered in the sixth. Shortstop Kodi Ramirez had three hits for the Bulldogs while first baseman Kaitlyn Orme along with designated player Justice Ruggles and second baseman Kacey Bouche both produced hits.

Freshman pitcher Aryn Gallacher tossed six innings for the Bulldogs, giving up two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Wayne State's Brooke Nadolny got the win, holding FSU to a single run on seven hits with eight K's in seven innings.

Wayne State netted 15 hits in game two and again limited Ferris State to seven total hits. Both teams scored twice in the first before WSU put up four in the second. The Bulldogs cut the lead back to one in the top half of the fourth, but the Warriors answered in the bottom with five runs and eventually sealed the victory with single runs in the fifth and the sixth.

For Ferris State, Ruggles homered and had two RBI's for the Bulldogs. Outfielder Paige Kortz doubled twice and finished with two hits and a run scored. Meanwhile, Orme also had a double and two hits while driving in a run. Catcher Kaitlyn Fick added two RBI's on a single hit while Bouche also produced a hit and scored a run.

FSU's Kaitlyn Nugent hurled one and one-third innings, allowing six runs on six hits with a walk. Kristie Gray then threw one and two-thirds of an inning, surrendering five runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Finally, senior Kylie Masko pitched two and two-thirds of an inning and gave up two runs on four hits with three walks and a K.

The Bulldogs will close the regular-season back at home on Wednesday (May 5) versus Saginaw Valley State starting at 1 p.m. (ET) for the opener at the FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids.
