Softball Splits with Ashland

Ashland, OH - The softball team was back in action Wednesday taking on NCAA Division II Ashland University. Sophomore pitcher Gina Verduzco (SO/Portage, MI) got the start in game one and shined both on the mound and in the batter's box. Verduzco pitched a complete game allowing 3 runs (2 earned) and striking out 2 batters. At the plate, she went 3 for 4 including an RBI single in the third inning. With the scored tied in the top of the fifth inning, sophomore second baseman Jordan Ewald (SO/Wixom, MI) homered giving the Wolverines a 3-2 lead. Michigan-Dearborn extended the lead to 4-2 on a Taylor Moceri (JR/Sterling Heights, MI) double which scored Nicole Payne (SR/Canton, MI). Ashland would score a run in the bottom of the seventh, but that was it, as a fly ball ended the game giving the Wolverines a 4-3 win.

In game two of the doubleheader, Verduzco got things going for Michigan-Dearborn in the top of the first. She doubled scoring Alexis Powell (SR/Canton, MI) and Ewald giving the Wolverines the early 2-0 lead. Ashland would quickly respond scoring one run in the bottom of the first off senior Abby Jewell (SR/Livonia, MI). Ashland would score three runs in the bottom of the second chasing Jewell from the game. Freshman Candace Kitchen (FR/Clarkston, MI) came in and pitched three innings allowing two runs. Junior Paige Altherr (JR/Allen Park, MI) finished the game pitching one and two-thirds of shutout softball. Michigan-Dearborn would only have three hits after the first inning in losing 6-2. Verduzco went 2 for 3 in game two as she went 5 for 7 in the doubleheader. The softball team will open up WHAC play against Indiana Tech this weekend at home.
