Ferris State Earns First Win Of Year As Part Of Saturday Split At Music City Invite

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team registered its first win of the 2023 season and garnered a day two split on Saturday (Feb. 18) at the Music City Invitational near Nashville, Tenn.

The Bulldogs fell in their opening game on Saturday by a 13-2 score in five innings of regional play against Northwood, but bounced back for a 9-0 shutout win over Kentucky Wesleyan in another regional tilt at the event.

The win over KWC not only marked FSU's first win of the 2023 season, but was also the Bulldogs' first under new head coach Jake Schumann.

In the opener against Northwood, the Timberwolves produced 11 hits and limited FSU to only four en route to the win. The Bulldogs trailed 2-1 after one before Northwood responded with four runs in the second and sixth in the third to help put the game away.

The Bulldogs got two hits from shortstop Abby Meyer in the game one defeat with outfielder Jadyn Joseph notching her first Bulldog hit as well as producing a pair of RBI's. The other FSU hit came off the stick of second baseman Josie Prince, who also stole a base.

The Bulldogs utilized three different pitchers in the game with Mckenzie Cleland suffering the setback. Overall, FSU walked 10 and struck out four as a staff.

In game two, Ferris State and Kentucky Wesleyan battled thru three scoreless innings before the Bulldogs broke the game open. FSU scored three runs in the fourth, added two more in the fifth and tallied four in the sixth to record the triumph. The Bulldogs produced 11 hits and limited KWC to only a single hit in the contest.

The Bulldogs got two hits each from outfielder Kylie Winkels along with designated player Evelyn Blood and catcher Natalie Teague in the win. Blood produced three RBI's for Ferris State and tripled in the game. Both Joseph and Katelyn Gabos also recorded triples and Winkels doubled twice in the win while scoring three times.

FSU's Aryn Gallacher earned the win for the Bulldogs in the pitching circle, allowing no earned runs and only a single hit in six innings of work. She struck out three and walked one.

Ferris State will close out the Music City Invitational with two more games on Sunday (Feb. 19). The Bulldogs will face McKendree at 10 a.m. (ET) followed by a 12 p.m. (ET) tilt against Findlay.
