Bulldogs Drop Home-Opening Doubleheader To Northwood In Regional Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team played its first home contests of the 2023 season on Wednesday (March 22), battling former league foe Northwood in a pair of regional matchups at the FSU Softball Field under cold and chilly conditions.

The Timberwolves pulled off the sweep, beating FSU 7-1 in the opener and 18-10 in a high-scoring finale.

In the opener, the Timberwolves struck for three runs in the second and added two more in both the fifth and seventh frames while limiting FSU to a single run in the game. NU posted 13 hits and limited the Bulldogs to only four.

The Bulldogs got doubles from Evelyn Blood and Kaitlyn Orme in the opener with Orme driving in FSU's lone run of the contest. In the pitching circle, three different FSU pitchers combined to allow five earned runs on 13 hits with six walks and three strikeouts.

NU got an impressive game one performance from ace pitcher Hailey Leister, who allowed only a single earned run on four hits with five strikeouts in going the distance.

Ferris State came up with 10 hits in game two, but the Bulldogs could not pull out the win. NU posted 17 hits in the game and built a 9-3 lead before the Bulldogs responded with a big fourth inning and took a 10-9 edge. However, Northwood came up with five runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth before holding FSU off the board in the bottom of the sixth to notch the victory.

Ferris State got a pair of doubles from Kylie Winkels along with one by Blood and one from second baseman Josie Prince. Orme tripled while Winkels drove in three runs and Blood produced two RBI's. Four different FSU batters produced two hits apiece, including shortstop Abby Meyer along with Winkels, Orme and Blood.

The Bulldogs utilized five different pitchers in the nightcap and allowed 16 earned runs on 17 hits with 10 walks and two K's. Meanwhile, Northwood had four pitchers combine to give up 10 earned runs on 10 hits with nine strikeouts and five walks.

FSU will open GLIAC play on the road Saturday as the Bulldogs visit Saginaw Valley State for a conference doubleheader. The opening pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m. (ET) in University Center with game two to follow.
