Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team came out on the short end of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader on Sunday (April 23) to Purdue Northwest in Hammond, Ind.
The host Pride battled back for a 12-4 win over FSU in six innings in game one before notching a 5-1 decision in the nightcap.
With the two setbacks, FSU closed its weekend road trip with a split following back-to-back road wins at Parkside on Saturday.
In Sunday's opener, Ferris State built a 4-0 lead into the fourth inning before the Pride responded with two runs in the fourth and nine runs in the fifth to take control. PNW finished with 16 hits in the game to seven for the Bulldogs.
Both Catherine O'Donohue and Jadyn Joseph tallied two hits each for the Bulldogs while Kaitlyn Orme and Brooklyn Verbeek drove in two runs apiece. O'Donohue doubled with both Orme and Verbeek notching home runs for FSU.
FSU's Sophie Wisniski pitched four and one-third innings with three strikeouts and a walk, giving up six runs on nine hits. Kristie Gray walked one while allowing three runs on two hits with O'Donohue pitching two-thirds of an inning. She gave up three runs on five hits with a strikeout.
Game two was a close affair with the Pride scoring in the first for the early lead before the Bulldogs tied up the game in the fourth. However, Purdue Northwest scored four runs in the sixth and kept FSU off the board in its final at-bat for the win. Overall, the Bulldogs totaled 10 hits to seven for the Pride.
Orme, O'Donohue and Joseph all had two hits apiece in the setback while Amara Zukowski drove in FSU's lone run.
The Bulldogs' Aryn Gallacher tossed all six innings for the Bulldogs and finished with five runs allowed on seven hits to go with three strikeouts.
Ferris State will host Wayne State in its final league home action on Friday (April 28) starting at 3 p.m. (ET) at the FSU Softball Field for game one and 5 p.m. (ET) for game two. It will also mark FSU's annual Senior Day with the Bulldogs slated to honor their senior class prior to the opener.
