Ferris State Falls In Opening Two Contests At The Spring Games In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team opened up a 12-game swing in Florida at The Spring Games with a pair of tightly-contested setbacks on Sunday (March 5) in the Sunshine State.

The Bulldogs dropped a 6-2 decision to Winona State (Minn.) in the opener before falling to Upper Iowa by a 2-0 score in the day one finale.

Ferris State outhit Winona State 8-5 in the opener, but had five errors in the field as the Warriors pulled out the win. WSU built a 3-0 lead after two innings before FSU cut the margin back to a single run by scoring twice in the fourth. However, Winona State responded with a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to garner the win.

Both Evelyn Blood and Josie Prince tallied two hits each for the Bulldogs while Brooklyn Verbeek and Kacey Bouche both knocked in a run. Verbeek tripled and Bouche double for FSU.

Ferris State allowed only a single earned run on five hits in the contest with four strikeouts and five walks in the pitching circle from a trio of pitchers.

In game two, Upper Iowa pounded out nine hits and limited Ferris State to only three. UIU scored single runs in the second and third and kept FSU off the board in the shutout win.

Blood tallied two hits for the Bulldogs with third baseman Amara Zukowski adding a single hit in the setback.

In the circle, FSU's Catherine O'Donohue pitched all six innings and allowed only one earned run on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

The Bulldogs will return to the diamond on Monday (March 6), taking on Sioux Falls at 2 p.m. (ET) and Northwood at 4:30 p.m. (ET) in Clermont, Fla.
