Ferris State Earns Big Rapids Win As Milestones Are Reached In Monday Afternoon Tilt
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad jumped in front early and finished strong in an 89-64 road win over Walsh on Monday (Dec. 19) in North Canton, Ohio.
The Bulldogs claimed the victory in their final game prior to the holiday break, improving to 8-2 overall after the opening 10 games of the campaign.
The win was the 100th career coaching victory for FSU head coach Kurt Westendorp and senior guard Mallory McCartney tallied a team-high 20 points while notching her 1,000th career point in the triumph.
Ferris State opened up a 17-14 lead after the opening period and then outscored Walsh 21-10 over the second frame. The Cavaliers cut FSU's 14-point halftime edge down to 10 at the end of three periods, but FSU closed the game with a 29-14 advantage in the final quarter.
In addition to her 20 points, McCartney also dished out 10 assists in the win. Kenzie Bowers added 17 points and a team-high 10 rebounds in a double-double showing while both Chloe Idoni and DeShonna Day totaled 14 points each.
The Bulldogs shot 55% from the floor and went 12-of-29 (41.4%) from three-point range along with 11-of-13 (84.6%) at the free throw stripe. Ferris State also held a 41-24 rebounding margin.
FSU limited Walsh to 39.3% shooting with the Cavaliers finishing 10-of-21 (47.6%) from long range and six-of-eight (75%) at the charity stripe.
Morgan McMillen paced Walsh with a game-high 21 points and Vanessa Sales added 12 points off the bench.
Ferris State will return from the holiday break with a regional road matchup at Ursuline on Dec. 29 before hosting Indianapolis on Dec. 31 at 3:30 p.m. (ET) inside Jim Wink Arena.
