Ferris State Softball Garners Split On Thursday In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team returned to the field on Thursday, scoring a third consecutive split at The Spring Games in Florida.

Following an off day, the Bulldogs returned to the diamond and fell to St. Cloud State by a 5-3 score in the opener before bouncing back for an 8-2 triumph over Concordia-St. Paul in the second contest of the day.

In the opener, St. Cloud State tallied three runs in the first and added a run in both of the sixth and seventh innings to hold off FSU, which scored single runs in the second, sixth and seventh frames. The Huskies notched 13 hits to six for the Bulldogs.

No one had multiple hits for the Bulldogs, but Brooklyn Verbeek doubled and Kaitlyn Orme tripled for FSU. In addition, Kylie Winkels homered for the Bulldogs and Amara Zukowski added an RBI in the setback.

FSU's Aryn Gallacher threw four innings and allowed two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts while the combination of Kristie Gray and Mauri Vines hurled three combined innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with two K's and two walks.

Ferris State came back in game two and beat Concordia-St. Paul, producing 12 hits in the game and allowing the opposition only five. FSU had a big fourth inning, breaking a 2-2 deadlock with five runs and never looked back.

Five different Bulldogs had two hits in the contest, including Abby Meyer, Jadyn Joseph, Josie Prince, Orme and Verbeek. Meyer drove in three runs and Catherine O'Donohue two for FSU, which also netted six doubles in the game. Verbeek scored three times.

O'Donohue pitched four innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Kristina Baar tossed one scoreless inning, allowing only a single hit with a walk and a strikeout while Gallacher threw two innings of scoreless play.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday morning, taking on West Virginia Wesleyan at 9:30 a.m. (ET) followed by an 11:30 a.m. (ET) matchup with Cedarville.
