Big Rapids- The Nationally #6-ranked Ferris State University women's soccer team began the 2023 season with a dominant 2-0 win over Maryville (Mo.) Aug. 31.

The Bulldogs (1-0-0) played their home and regular season opener against the Saints. Junior goalkeeper Darya Mosallaei recorded a shutout in the victory.

Ferris State got goals from sophomore Haley Buckman and freshman Isabella Baron in the win. The goals were both players' first career tallies. Senior Payton Price assisted on Buckman's tally.

In the first half, the Bulldogs fired three shots on target but were held scoreless. Mosallaei was tested just once and made the save. Ferris State also held a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks through the first 45 minutes of play.

After halftime, Ferris applied offensive pressure quickly. At 65:34, Price beat her defender to the outside of the field and fired a centering pass to Buckman. Buckman beat Gigi Yurevich in goal for Maryville to give Ferris State a 1-0 lead.

Just 13 minutes later, Baron sliced through the Saints' defense and fired a shot from the top of the box that found the back of the net. The Bulldogs comfortably held their 2-0 lead for the remainder of the game.

Mosallaei recorded four saves in the contest, while the Bulldogs as a team attempted eight corner kicks compared to just two for Maryville. Ferris State also had 18 total shots, doubling the nine attempts from the Saints.

Ferris State faced Maryville in the 2022 season opener and fell 2-1.

The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to Sunday, Sept. 3, where a matchup with the Northwood Timberwolves awaits in Big Rapids. In a matchup with the Timberwolves last year, Ferris State claimed a 4-1 victory.
