Football Drops 28-21 Contest At Michigan Tech

The Northwood University football team dropped a tough 28-21 contest at Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon (October 13). 

Northwood is now 4-3 overall, 3-3 in the GLIAC. Michigan Tech improves to 5-1 overall and in the GLIAC.

The Huskies took the lead early on in the game on a touchdown run to go up 7-0. But the Timberwolves controlled the play the rest of the half. Less than three minutes after the Huskies TD, Aaron Shavers (Detroit, Mich./Inkster) found freshman Carrington Thompson (Houston, Tex./Lamar) for a 29-yard touchdown, tying the game 7-7 with 2:02 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Northwood took the lead for the first time. Shavers and Thompson combined for their second TD of the day, this one from eight yards out to put the Timberwolves up 14-7 with 12:24 remaining in the half.

Before the game went to halftime, Northwood made it 21-7. After the NU defense forced a turnover, the offense went 82-yards on eight plays. Sophomore Rashad Hedgepeth (Rocky Mount, N.C./Northern Nash) capped the drive with a 26-yard touchdown run. That proved to be the final score of the half. The Timberwolves finished the half with a 185-140 edge in total yards and were a +3 in turnovers in the opening 30 minutes.

Michigan Tech proved to be the better team in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points. The score was tied 21-21 late in the fourth quarter, but the Huskies scored a 60-yard touchdown with 2:37 remaining to take a 28-21 lead. Northwood got a chance to tie the game but were unable to get anything going.

MTU finished the game with a 397-280 edge in total yards, which included a 257-95 advantage in the second half. The Timberwolves ended the game with 134 yards rushing and 146 yards passing in the game.

Thompson finished the game with 65 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns. Hedgepeth totaled 86 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Shavers had 140 yards and two touchdowns. Spencer Remtema (Rockford, Mich.) led the way for the NU defense with 12 tackles.

Northwood will travel to Grand Valley State next Saturday (October 20). Game time is set for 7 p.m.
