Men's Soccer Earns Dramatic 3-2 Win Over Tiffin

The Northwood Timberwolves men's soccer team earned a dramatic 3-2 victory over Tiffin Friday afternoon (September 14).

Northwood is now 2-0-1 overall, 2-0 in the GLIAC. Tiffin falls to 1-2-1 overall, 0-2 in the GLIAC.

The game was tied 1-1 at halftime thanks to a pair of penalty kicks. Northwood got the scoring going with a PK by Jack Smith (Lancaster, England). It was his first goal of the season and put the Timberwolves up 1-0 in the 20th minute. Less than seven minutes later, the Dragons converted a PK of their own, which proved to be the final goal of the half. Northwood out-shot Tiffin 6-3 in the opening 45 minutes.

The score remained 1-1 until the 78th minute, when the Dragons headed in a ball off a corner kick to go up 2-0. Northwood responded 3:30 minutes later, when NU drew another PK. Sam Nair (London, England/Nower Hill), playing in his first career game, converted the attempt to even the score at two.

It appeared the game was heading to overtime until sophomore Michael Ankoviak (W. Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) came up with the biggest play of the match. He picked up a loose ball and buried a rebound with just 1:38 remaining. That goal stood as the game winner.

For the match, Northwood out-shot Tiffin 16-7. NU also finished with a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Northwood will return to action Sunday (September 16) with a match against Findlay. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
