Findlay Splits with Tiffin | Ondrejcak Gets First Win
Findlay, OH – The University of Findlay baseball team split with the Tiffin University Dragons on Saturday, April 16 to improve their record to 11-16 overall with a 4-8 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.
Game 1 (L 3-0) Box Score
Pitching was the story in the first contest as both starting pitchers went toe-to-toe, giving up no runs through five innings of play. The Dragons finally got to Oilers' starter, sophomore Colin Gossard in the sixth inning, plating two runs. Another run in the seventh would lead to the final score of 3-0.
Gossard, now 0-3 on the year, took the loss on the hill after pitching six innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked one and struck out five.
Findlay received hits from freshman Derrick Herd and junior Peter Yorgen. The Oilers did load the bases with one out in the third inning, but a double play ended the scoring threat.
The Oilers finished with no runs on two hits. They did not make an error and left six runners on base.
Game 2 W (1-0) Box Score
The second contest began much like the first with teams trading zeros through five and a half innings. Finally, in the bottom of the sixth, the Oilers took a lead.
Herd walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a groundout and strikeout, Yorgen delivered on a first pitch fastball with a single up the middle, plating Herd for the Oilers first run of the day.
Tiffin's best chance to score came in the top of the eighth inning when they had runners on first and third with one out. With the infield in, a ground ball was hit to Herd at short. He fired home and beat a sliding Nick Hueneburg to get the out.
Sophomore Anothony Ondrejcak came out of the bullpen to pitch one and two-thirds innings and allowed just one hit. He earned the victory on the hill, the first of his career.
A.J. Cecil came on in the bottom of the ninth inning and, despite a leadoff single, closed the game out to earn the save.
Herd, Yorgen, sophomore Christion Smith, and sophomore Pete Burkett each had hits for the Oilers who finished with one run on four hits. Findlay earned the victory despite making five errors in the field as the Dragons stranded 11 runners on base.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow with a double-header beginning at 1:00 pm.
