Oilers Crush Lake Erie In Doubleheader Sweep

Painesville, OH – The University of Findlay softball team traveled to Painesville, Ohio to face Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Lake Erie College in a doubleheader, which took place on Wednesday, April 22.  The Oilers won the first game 7-3 and their barrage of scoring continued as they won the second game 16-8.  The doubleheader sweep gives the Oilers a 25-17 record on the season, which includes a 13-8 record in GLIAC play. 

In the first game, Chelsea McManaway picked up the victory on the mound for the Oilers (14-5).  She gave up eight hits and struck out three batters in five innings. 

The Oilers got on the board first as Lauren Trumpler blasted a solo homerun to right field to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead.  Then, in the top of the third inning, something remarkable happened for the Oilers.  The Oilers managed to knock in back-to-back-to-back homeruns to take a 4-0 lead as Katie Dunphy, Emily Stewart and Lauren Trumpler all blasted solo shots to center field.  The spree of dingers helped catapult the Oilers to victory as they cruised to a 7-3 final. 

Abby Funk finished the game with two singles while Amanda Badertscher added a double and a run scored.  Meredith Shepherd added a single and a run scored in the contest. 

In the second game, Bonnie Zappitelli picked up the victory on the mound for the Oilers (4-6).  She gave up eight hits and struck out two batters in four innings of work. 

The Oilers cruised to a 7-1 lead through three innings and their offense kept on rolling as they scored three runs in each of the last three innings as they walloped Lake Erie 16-8. 

Lauren Trumpler had a big game at the plate for the Oilers as she finished hitting 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored, a double and six runs batted in.  Emily Stewart also helped lead the offense for the Oilers as she finished the game hitting 3-for-4 with two doubles, a single, two runs scored and two runs batted in. 

The offense kept on rolling for the Oilers as Megan Turner blasted a solo shot and Abby Funk knocked in a two RBI homerun. 

Katie Dunphy finished the game with two singles, two runs scored and one run batted in while Destinie Keeton added an RBI double. 

The Oilers return to the field on Friday, April 24 when they host GLIAC rival Grand Valley State University in a doubleheader at Anderson Field.  The first game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
