Dragons Split on Opening Day

The Tiffin University volleyball team opened the 2016 season with a split on Friday, beating Fisk University in game one 3-0, but falling in the night cap to Trevecca Nazarene 3-2.

Tiffin - 3 vs. Fisk - 0

Tiffin exploded out of the gate, winning set one in dominant fashion, 25-12. Tiffin kept their foot on the pedal in set two, jumping out to an 8-0 lead on their way to a 25-17 set two victory. Fisk kept set three close, falling behind early but clawed their way back to an 8-8 draw. That was as close as the Bulldogs would get, as the Dragons motored home for a 25-20 set three victory.

The Bulldogs held the lead once over the three set contest, jumping out in front early in set one. TU held a commanding 43-20 lead in kills, and also took advantage of the service ace, totaling 11. Individually, Olivia Cobb and Jenna Huffman led the way with seven kills each. Emily Weithman continued her stellar play from 2015, collecting 37 assists and three service aces.

Tiffin - 2 vs. Trevecca Nazarene - 3

TU came into their contest with the Trojans eyeing a sweep, and in set one it looked as if they were on their way.

Tiffin pounded Trevecca in the opening set, using an 11-4 run to deliver a 25-14 set one win. The Trojans responded in set two, narrowly claiming a 26-24 set two win. Trevecca kept the ball rolling their way, taking set three with a late 4-0 run to claim set three 25-21. The Dragons, needing a set four victory to keep their sweep hopes alive, dug in and clawed their way to a 25-17 victory to force a fifth set. In the deciding set, TU fell behind 10-4 and were unable to rally, losing 15-8.

Tiffin's hitting percentage fell by 82 points from game one to game two, as they hit at a .190 clip against Trevecca. The youngster, Jenna Huffman, led the way in the kills department for the Dragons, smacking 13. Alexandria Miglin chipped in with 12 kills, and Emily Weithman added 45 assists.

For the season, Tiffin is 1-1. TU will be back in action tomorrow, competing in two games. The Dragons will tangle with the University of North Alabama and Martin Methodist.
