Dragons thump Lakers 18-5

The Tiffin University baseball team bashed their way to an 18-5 victory on Friday afternoon, cranking out 21 hits in the 9-inning contest.

The Dragons jumped on the Lakers from the start, crossing the plate four times in the 1st inning. GVSU scored a run in their half of the 1st, and once again TU piled on the runs an inning later. Tiffin pushed another four runs across in the 2nd to lead 8-1.

The Dragons blew the game open in the 3rd with a six spot. Two big hits led to all six of the runs, with Nick Hueneburg smacking home run number 13, a three run blast to right field. Garrett Vernau tripled with two on, scoring Alec McCurry and Isaac Perry, then crossed the plate himself on an errant throw by the center fielder to give the Dragons a 14-1 lead.

Tiffin scored another run in the 4th, and piled another three runs on in the 8th inning for a 18-5 victory over the GLIAC North leading Lakers.

On the mound, Mike Cooperider earned the victory, tossing five innings, surrendering five runs while striking out two. Offensively, Kurt Barbeau finished 3 for 5 with three runs scored, Devon Fisk was 3 for 4 with four runs scored, and Nick Hueneburg finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored and five runs batted in.

The Dragons move to 20-27 overall and 11-18 in GLIAC play.
