SVSU tops LSSU in three for first GLIAC win

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team earned its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season, sweeping Lake Superior State University Saturday at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.

The Cardinals controlled the first two sets and held off a rally from the Lakers in the third to earn the three-set win. The victory moves SVSU to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC.

The set scores were 25-19, 25-22, 25-20.

Madison Thompson stepped up to lead the SVSU attack with 13 kills, while Haley Clum added six kills. Peyton Gerstacker recorded 27 assists as she continues to impress this season at the setter position.

The SVSU defense dominated at the net, recording 13 total blocks. Rylee Zimmer led the way for the Cardinals with one solo block and seven block assists. Olivia Waszak added six block assists and Clum finished with one solo block and five block assists. Kelsey Vittitow finished with a team-high 14 digs and Maria Vukaj added 12.

The Cardinals hit the road for the next two weekends, starting with a matchup against the Purdue Northwest at 8 PM on Friday in Hammond, Ind.
