Depew, Mundy shutdown Warriors in Cardinal sweep

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team extended its win streak to six straight after a dominating sweep of Wayne State University Saturday at the SVSU Softball Complex.

The Cardinals rolled to a 4-1 win over the Warriors in game one, on the strength of a complete from Emily Depew. SVSU picked up a 9-0, five-inning shutout in game two, with Julia Mundy getting the win and Sarah Gersch ending the contest with a walk-off home run.

The sweep pushes SVSU to 25-12 overall and 14-10 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals are sitting in third place in the GLIAC with six games remaining in the regular season.

In game one, Depew (8-1) held the Warriors to one hit through six innings. She allowed one run on three hits and struck out two in the complete game.

Jackie Popko got the scoring started early for SVSU with a two-run home run in the first. Shelby Misiak doubled home a run in the second and Popko added an RBI double in the fifth.

SVSU took control of game two early with three runs in the first. Julia Salisbury doubled home a run and came home to score on a Leah Denome single later in the innings. Meagan VerVaecke laid down a suicide squeeze play to score Denome.

Popko and Salisbury each added an RBI in the second, while VerVaecke hit an opposite-field solo home run in the third to make it 6-0. VerVaecke added a run with an RBI single in the fourth, while Gersch ended the game with a home run in the fifth.

Mundy improved to 8-4 this season, pitching all five innings, allowing five hits, and striking out one.

The Cardinals and Warriors match up again at 1 pm Sunday in Detroit.
