WEEK ONE PREVIEW: SVSU opens season at home vs. WVWC on Thursday Night

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University Football team opens the 2022 season against West Virginia Wesleyan College in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. SVSU finished the 2021 season with a record of 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the GLIAC, while WVWC struggled last season, closing with a record of 0-11.

SVSU is receiving votes in the AFCA Preseason NCAA DII Poll and was picked to finish fourth in the GLIAC in the Coaches Poll. The Cardinals return a strong core of experienced student-athletes that will look to lead the team this fall.

The Cardinal defense was disruptive in 2021, leading the nation in defensive takeaways with 30 total (15 INTs, 15 FRs). Head Coach Ryan Brady will look to names like Michael Woolridge and Noah Suber to lead a talented secondary, while Victor Nelson, Nathan Talakai, Jacob Dorn, and others will be a force up front for SVSU. Trevor Nowaske returns to lead the Cardinals linebackers in 2022.

On offense, the Cardinals have a stable of talented quarterbacks ready to lead the team. Tyler Amos will be looked to as a key piece in the backfield, while Casey Williams and Derrick Hinton Jr. look to pace the receiving corps.
