Cardinals shut down Warriors for 2-1 win in finale

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team earned a series split with Wayne State University, taking the finale of a four-game weekend series Sunday at the SVSU Baseball Complex.

Kendall Anthes and Eric Fritz combined on the mound, allowing just five hits and one unearned run as the Cardinals topped the Warriors 2-1. The win pushes SVSU to 11-8 overall and 7-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Runs were at a premium in the game with the Cardinals getting on the board first. After Martin Money doubled to lead off the second, Todd Paperd drove him in with a two-out triple. The score remained 1-0 in favor of SVSU until Wayne State tied the game with a single unearned run in the fifth.

SVSU got the game's big hit in the seventh as Connor McClennen singled home Paperd with two outs for the game-winning run.

Anthes got the start, tossing five innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits, walking two, and striking out four. Fritz (2-1) pitched the final four innings, giving up just two hits and striking out two, getting credit for the win.

The Cardinals remain home to host rival Northwood University for a four-game series starting at 3:05 pm Friday at the SVSU Baseball Complex.
