Cardinal tennis opens 2021 at Ashland Invitational

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team opened the 2021 fall season at the Ashland University Invitational Saturday and Sunday in Ashland, Ohio.

The event was played under the hidden dual-match format with the Cardinals matching up with host Ashland and West Virginia State University.

In the singles competition on Saturday, the Cardinals took five of six matchups with Ashland and dropped all but one matchup to WVSU.

Against Ashland in Singles:

1 Singles – Sara Neves lost 3-6, 2-6

2 Singles – Nicole Johnson won 6-1, 6-1

3 Singles – Elizabeth Stuart won 6-3, 6-4

4 Singles – Irene Lattore Barreiro won 6-3, 6-4

5 Singles – Alexis Anthes won 6-3, 6-1

6 Singles – Andrea Teofilovic won 6-4, 6-1

Against WVSU in Singles:

1 Singles – Neves lost 0-6, 0-6

2 Singles – Chelsea Dzenga lost 1-6, 1-6

3 Singles – Johnson won 6-3, 7-6

4 Singles – Stuart lost 1-6, 2-6

5 Singles – Barreiro lost 2-6, 1-6

6 Singles – Young lost 4-6, 2-6

The teams returned to the court on Sunday for a doubles competition with the Cardinals taking two of three from Ashland and were swept by WVSU.

Against Ashland in Doubles:

1 Doubles – Dzenga, Neves lost 5-7

2 Doubles – Anthes, Teofilovic won 6-3

3 Doubles – Barreiro, Young won 6-1

Against WVSU in Doubles:

1 Doubles – Neves, Johnson lost 1-6

2 Doubles – Stuart, Dzenga lost 4-6

3 Doubles – Anthes, Young lost 0-6

The Cardinals continue the fall season at the ITA Regionals next weekend starting on Saturday in Indianapolis.
