Ashland tops SVSU in series opener 3-2

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team opened the final regular-season series of 2021 against Ashland University Friday in Ashland, Ohio.

The Cardinals rallied in the late innings, but the Eagles held on for the 3-2 win. The loss drops SVSU to 16-13 overall and 11-10 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

After Ashland opened the game with a run in the first, the Eagles took advantage of a Cardinal error to add two more in the third. Martin Money got the Cardinals in the seventh with a home run in the seventh to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Austin Koin drove home a run in the ninth, but the Eagles closed out the game.

Hayden Jatczak (4-3) took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking two, and striking out three.

The series continues with a doubleheader starting at 1 pm Saturday in Ashland, Ohio.
