Cardinals drop home opener to Timberwolves in three

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team played its first home match of the season, opening the 2021 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season against rival Northwood University Friday at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.

The Timberwolves spoiled the night for the Cardinals, sweeping the match 3-0 and handing SVSU its first loss of the season. The defeat drops the Cardinals to 8-1 overall and 0-1 in the GLIAC.

The set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 25-22.

Maria Vukaj led the offense for SVSU with 10 kills, while Rylee Zimmer added seven. Peyton Gerstacker recorded a double-double with 24 assists and 11 digs. Caitlinn Pistro and Kelsey Vittitow split time at the Libero position, finishing with 13 digs and 10 digs, respectively.

Despite being in each set until the final points, SVSU could not overcome mistakes with eight service errors and 17 hitting errors in the match.

SVSU will look to rebound with a quick turnaround, facing Lake Superior State University at 2 pm Saturday at the James E. O'Neill Arena.
