Cardinals tie Panthers 1-1 in 5th straight 2OT game

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team was able to escape with a tie against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader Davenport University on a wet and muddy Friday at Braddock Field.

After SVSU fell behind 1-0 on a first-half Panther goal, the Cardinals found the equalizer in the 77th minute on an own goal. The contest ended 1-1 after 110 minutes of action. The draw moves SVSU to 8-4-4 overall and 5-3-4 in the GLIAC.

The contest was the fifth straight double-overtime game for the Cardinals and the eighth overall this season. SVSU sits in fourth place in the GLIAC standings with two regular-season games remaining as the Cardinals look to secure home-field advantage in the opening round of the conference tournament.

The scoring started with George Deveau scoring on a cross from the left side from Eoin Broughan in the 37th minute.

The game remained 1-0 in favor of Davenport until the Panther found the net again in the 77th minute, this time it was the wrong net for Davenport. SVSU Alex Gloshen played a cross to Brady Walker, who let loose a shot that was heading wide of the post. Deveau tried to play the ball away from his net but pushed it across the line for the Cardinal goal.

Both teams had several chances the rest of the way, however, the score remained 1-1 through the extra time. SVSU outshot Davenport 29-9 but had trouble getting the ball on frame through the defenders for the Panthers. Callum Harley made one save in goal for the Cardinals.

SVSU remains home to host Purdue Northwest at 1 pm on Sunday. The location of the contest will be announced soon.
