WEEK TWO: (RV) Cardinals host No. 9 Bulldogs for SV Classic Showdown

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University football team opened the 2022 season with a dominant performance at home last week, rolling West Virginia Wesleyan College 72-0. The points scored were the most by the Cardinals since the season opener of the 1997 season, when SVSU put 73 on Wayne State University.

SVSU and Bowie State have teamed up this week for a celebration of the HBCU Experience, culminating with the SV Classic game at 1 pm on Saturday at Wickes Stadium. For more information on all events surrounding the SV Classic CLICK HERE.

The Cardinals saw six different rushers find the end zone, including three scores by the Meijer Player of the Game, Dante Barthwell, who finished with nine carries for 82 yards. The Cardinals totaled 52 carries for 372 yards on the ground in the win.

Andrew Brito got the start at quarterback and was 7-of-13 passing for 59 yards. Willie Taylor came in later in the game and finished 5-of-8 passing for 71 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to Earnest Sanders IV.

The No. 9 Bulldogs outlasted No. 16 New Haven at home last weekend 27-20, with Bowie State scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter. Dion Golatt Jr. led the BSU comeback with 266 yards through the air and three scores.

Last season, the Bulldogs edged the Cardinals 28-17 in Bowie, Md.
