Cardinals sweep season series with Timberwolves with 5-0 win

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team completed a perfect week, recording a third consecutive shutout with a win over rival Northwood University on Sunday at Braddock Field.

Leading by two goals at the half, SVSU pulled away midway through the second half with three more scores to top Northwood 5-0. The victory moves SVSU to 9-2-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Sara Samolinski got the Cardinals going early with a brilliant shot from outside the box over the keeper and into the far side of the net. The goal was Samolinski's third of the season. Amy Babon scored her first of two goals in the game in the 29th minute to make it 2-0. Lea Grunnagel and Stephanie Strong earned the assists on the goal.

Babon scored her seventh of the season in the 62nd minute on a header following a great cross by Samolinski. Strong scored her team-high 11th goal of the season eight minutes later with the assist from Solana Kelly, while Michelle Missler scored her first career goal on a feed from Lindsey Rzeszutko in the 79th minute.

Olivia Argeros recorded her eighth shutout of the season, making two saves in net for the Cardinals.

SVSU hits the road for the final time in the 2021 regular season with three games this week, starting against the Purdue Northwest in a makeup game at 4 pm EST Tuesday in Hammond, Ind.
