Cardinals fall to Lakers in 3 sets

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball squad returned home to Hamilton Gymnasium after three straight road contests on Friday evening when the Cardinals battled visiting Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Grand Valley State University.

But the Lakers (10-4 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) handed the Cardinals (8-6, 4-2) a 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 defeat behind a .269 attack efficiency while holding SVSU to a .132 clip.

How it Happened:

  • The teams saw a back-and-forth opening set before Grand Valley prevailed by four points.
  • In the second set, the Lakers hit .350 while holding the Cardinals to .061 to take control two sets-to-none.
  • The Cardinals didn't give up in the decisive set as the teams engaged in several long rallies.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Rylee Zimmer led the Cardinals with eight kills and tied teammate Peyton Gerstacker for match-high honors of 15 digs.
  • Zimmer also posted three total blocks including two solos.
  • Gerstacker also tied opponents Rachel Jacquay and Jordyn Gates with a match-best 19 assists, while recording six kills.
  • Savannah Thompson paced GVSU with a double-double that included a match-high 15 kills (.542) and 13 digs.
  • The Cardinals have lost back-to-back matches for just the second time this season.
