Baseball Eliminated from GLIAC Tournament

LANSING, MICH. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team was eliminated from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament in the Championship game after a 5-3 loss to Grand Valley State University on Sunday afternoon.

Reed Raymond (L, 0-2) got the start on the mound and went 5.0 innings. He struck out four Lakers in the losing effort. Nick Bastian finished the game with 4.0 innings pitched in relief, allowing just one hit in the appearance.

Four-straight singles by GVSU in the first inning put two runs on the board early for the Lakers. A fielder's choice and another single scored two more runs as Grand Valley took an early 4-0 lead. A fifth run scored in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly.

Colin Cornwell doubled to right center to get on base in the seventh inning. Austin Schweiger hit an infield single and the Cardinals had runners in the corners with just one out. Raymond scored Cornwell on a sacrifice fly to left center for the first run of the game for SVSU. Jaccar Watkins singled to right field to score Schweiger and trim the lead to 5-2 with two innings left.

Connor McClennen doubled down the left field line to score Lucas Mead with two outs and cut the lead to 5-3. Brandon Scheurer walked to set the table for a two-out rally, but the third out was recorded on the next at-bat.

Watkins finished the game with two hits in his three plate appearances while tallying one of SVSU's three RBI. McClennen was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Mead, Schweiger, and Cornwell recorded a hit, Raymond and McClennen adding an RBI to their stat line.
