Nnolim's late strike lifts No. 5 SVSU to 1-0 win at NMU

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team needed nearly all the time the clock to find the net, but the No. 5 Cardinals remained perfect in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a win at Northern Michigan University on Friday.

The Cardinals scored the game's lone goal in the 90th minute to escape with a 1-0 win over the Wildcats to move to 8-0-1 overall and 5-0-0 in the GLIAC.

The contest was tight throughout with SVSU narrowly holding on to the lead in total shots 8-6.

In the final minute of play, Chidie Nnolim collected a pass from Jordan Murray near the top of the box. He made one move and fired it home with 46 seconds to play, setting off a Cardinal celebration and giving SVSU the win.

Nick Kay got the start in net for the Cardinals and made two saves, earning his third consecutive shutout for the Cardinals. Kay (3-0-0) has played 270 minutes in net this season and has yet to allow a goal for SVSU.

The Cardinals remain on the road for a tough test at Wisconsin-Parkside at 1 pm on Sunday in Kenosha, Wis.
