Cardinals split GLIAC DH with Pride

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team continued Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a doubleheader against Purdue Northwest Saturday at the SVSU Softball Complex.

The Cardinals split with the Pride, taking game one 9-1 and falling in the finale 5-4. SVSU moves to 12-4 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC.

In game one, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead with two in the first, one in the second, and four more in the third, highlighted by a three-run home run from Blasia Moyler.

Julia Salisbury and Sara Moos each picked up an RBI in the first inning. After SVSU scored on a wild pitch in the second, Meagan VerVaecke got the scoring started in the third with a sacrifice fly.

Moyler picked up her fourth RBI of the game with a single in the fifth and the Cardinals ended the game with an RBI on a fielder's choice off the bat of Kael Prickett.

Jaclyn Groves (4-0) got the win on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking two, and striking out three.

PNW scored one run in each of the first three innings of game two to take a 3-0 lead. Jackie Popko got the Cardinals on the board with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the third. Salisbury tied the game on a two-run home run later in the inning.

The Pride found two runs in the fifth to regain the lead 5-3, while Sabrina Sage cut the deficit to one with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning. SVSU looked to tie the score in the sixth, but Leah Denome was tagged out advancing home to end the threat.

Kasey Bagelmann (1-1) was charged with the loss on the mound in relief, allowing one run on three hits, walking two in two innings of work.

The Cardinals continue the week-long homestand with a doubleheader against Wisconsin Parkside at noon Sunday at the SVSU Softball Complex.
