No.3 GVSU outlasts SVSU in GLIAC matchup

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team welcomed the defending NCAA DII National Champion and third-ranked Grand Valley State University Lakers on Sunday at the SVSU IM Field.

The Cardinals answered a first-half GVSU goal two send the game to half tied at 1-1. The Lakers scored twice in the second half to go up by a pair and held off a later rally to top SVSU 3-2.

The loss drops SVSU to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the GLIAC.

How it Happened:

  • Taylor Reid scored the first of her two goals in the 36th minute to put GVSU up 1-0.
  • Rileigh Garbarz scored her second of the season off a corner kick from Hadley Wells to tie the game for SVSU just over five minutes later.
  • The Lakers went back in front with Reid's second of the game early in the second half.
  • GVSU was able to double its lead to 3-1 with a goal from Kennedy Bearden.
  • The Cardinals were able to get back into the contest on the first career goal for Madi Bajis with 15 minutes to play. Stephanie Strong had the assist on the goal.

Inside the Box Score:

  • The Lakers outshot the Cardinals 17-13 and had the narrow advantage in corner kicks, 5-4.
  • Lainey Garbarz (2-1-0) made six saves in net for the Cardinals.
  • Strong took four shots with one on goal for SVSU.
