MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team hosted the second of two matches in two days, taking on Michigan Tech in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Friday at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
The Cardinals dropped two of the three doubles matches and fell in four of the six singles matches as the Huskies escaped with a 5-2 win. The loss drops SVSU to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in the GLIAC.
Adiya Young and Gyselle Daza Gutierrez came through with a win at No. 3 doubles 6-1 for SVSU.
Nicole Johnson won a battle at No. 5 singles for the Cardinals, 3-6, 6-4, 10-1 (TB) to get SVSU on the board in singles, while Young cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. Emma Charlton was edged at No. 2 singles, falling 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 10-5.
"Another close GLIAC match for us that just didn't fall our way, but I'm happy with the improvement over the last two matches," SVSU Head Coach Ryan Ruzziconi said. "We are a young team still learning to pull out close matches."
The Cardinals continue GLIAC play against Lake Superior State University at 9 am Saturday at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
