Cardinals advance to GLIAC Semifinals with 4-0 win

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team opened the 2021 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a dominant win over Upper Iowa University Sunday at Braddock Field.

The No. 1 seed Cardinals controlled the game from the start, not allowing the No. 8 seed Peacocks to get a shot on goal. SVSU scored three in the first half and added a fourth shortly after the break to cruise to a 4-0 win.

SVSU improves to 8-0-0 this season and will now host the remaining rounds of the GLIAC Tournament.

Danny Barlow followed up his three-goal game on Thursday with two goals and an assist in the quarterfinal win. His first came in the sixth minute, taking a pass from Alex Gloshen and firing it to the back post to put SVSU up 1-0.

Barlow netted his second goal and 10th of the season just 13 minutes later when he settled a loose ball around the top of the box and beat the UIU goalkeeper.

The Cardinals added to their lead just before the half with the third goal of the season from Brady Walker, with Barlow picking up the assist. SVSU put the game out of reach, as Robbie Bruce converted a penalty just over two minutes into the second half.

Mason Maziasz kept a clean sheet for the Cardinals in the net as the defense did not allow a shot on net. Maziasz is 8-0-0 in goal this season.

The Cardinals advance to the semifinals to take on No. 5 seed Ashland University at 1 pm Friday at Braddock Field. SVSU defeated Ashland 1-0 in overtime earlier this season on the road. No. 2 seed the University of Wisconsin Parkside and No. 6 seed Davenport University will play in the second semifinal game at 4 pm on Friday.
